The CUNY Graduate Center art history program is currently offering several exciting fellowship opportunities for students at various levels of their graduate work! All are due Friday, March 16. See below for details.

Museum Research Consortium (MRC) Fellows Program at MoMA
Pre-doctoral Fellowship
September 10, 2018-August 30, 2019 (full-time position

Selection and Qualifications
The successful fellowship candidate will have the following qualifications and qualities:

  • Specialization in modern and/or contemporary art
  • Superior academic achievement and support of their faculty
  • Demonstrated research and writing capabilities of the highest caliber
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work within a team in a professional environment with many demands and constituencies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of at least one foreign language
  • Knowledge of basic office procedures, software, and skills

With the support of the Mellon Foundation, MoMA is offering a stipend of $32,672 to each fellow. Consortium member institutions will underwrite matriculation and other fees during the year of the fellowship. Eligible candidates should have finished course work and qualifying exams by the start of the fellowship. Students interested in either academic or museum careers are welcome to apply.

Mellon Curatorial Fellowships 2018-2019

$25,000 per year plus $1,500 travel stipend; Access to NYSHIP; tuition will be covered.
Working 2 days per week during the academic year (i.e. end of August 2018 to early June 2019)

Eligibility:

All currently enrolled students in the Art History program are eligible to apply, excluding students who have previously held a Mellon Curatorial Fellowship at a partner museum. James Gallery MellonFellowship holders and other Grad Center Fellowship holders are welcome to apply.

 Brief Descriptions

Dia Center for the Arts
Dia Art Foundation seeks a Curatorial Fellow to assist with research and      development of Dia’s collection of conceptual and minimal art of the 1960s and 1970s, specifically German artists Joseph Beuys, Imi Knoebel, Blinky Palermo, and Franz Erhard Walther. The fellow’s research will be focused on the development of comprehensive chronologies around Dia’s engagement with these core artists in our collection. The Fellow will assist with Dia’s current exhibitions and programs, including conversations, lectures and symposia. See link above for further details.

Whitney Museum
The Whitney Museum of American Art seeks a Curatorial Fellow to work closely with members of the curatorial team on activities at the core of the Museum’s program, specifically related to postwar thematic exhibitions and research on the collection. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate with outstanding research and writing skills and a focus in 20th and 21st century American art to gain hands-on experience with foundational aspects of exhibition making. Queens Museum
Queens Museum seeks a Curatorial Fellow to assist with public program planning for a range of Queens Museum offerings in 2018-19, both traveling and QM-initiated exhibitions. This includes a large group exhibition of contemporary visual art; a survey of a lesser-known New York painter who died of AIDS in 1985; an extensive presentation of a famous early 20th-century cartoonist; and two major new commissions by emerging New York artists. See link above for further details.

Marian Goodman Travel Fellowship

The Ph.D. Program in Art History is pleased to announce a call for applications for travel fellowships [$1000- $3000] for Ph. D. Program in Art History students. Fellowship awards should be used for visiting museums and archives relevant to the student’s research, including the cost of travel and accommodations.

Applications should include:

  • A research proposal (3 pages, double-spaced), addressed to the Fellowship Committee
  • A proposed itinerary and budget

Marian Goodman Fellowship

Description: We are happy to announce that we will be offering Level 3 students the chance to apply for the Marian Goodman Fellowship. Fellowship recipients will receive a non-teaching Graduate Assistant D ($4770 plus eligibility for NYSHIP health insurance) for the 2018-2019 academic year, which can be used for tuition and health insurance expenses.

Eligibility: Unfunded Level 3 candidates are eligible to apply, specifically students beyond their years of funding who have a strong chance of completing their dissertations in the 2018-19 academic year. Applicants must reach Level 3 status by the start of the Fall 2018 semester. Students on a leave of absence in the Spring 2018 semester are eligible to apply as long as they plan to enroll the following academic year.

Selection: Based on a combination of need and merit.

Teaching Fellow (GAB

Description: The fellow should be prepared to teach  Intro to Modern Art (ARH 141) for Fall ’18 on Thurs. from 10-12:40 and Intro to Western Art (ARH 167) course (from Parthenon to Jasper Johns) at night (6-8:40PM) for Spring ’19 at Lehman College.

Requirements: The ideal candidate will have a background teaching art history survey courses, particularly within the CUNY system.

Eligibility: Students who have held a five-year ECF or GCF are NOT eligible for this award.  TF students, however, as well as those who have not received five-year funding packages, are encouraged to apply. Fellows must be enrolled full-time in both the fall and the spring semesters.  Students on a leave of absence in the Spring 2018 semester are eligible to apply as long as they plan to enroll in Fall 2018.

Benefits: This is a Graduate B (GAB) teaching assistantship. The salary for a GAB is $11,969 per year (starting with $5984.50 for Fall 2018) and requires the fellow to teach ONE course each semester. The fellow can also pick up an adjunct course each semester as well. The GAB will offer in-state CUNY tuition remission to candidates who are within their first 10 registered semesters of study. Students who are beyond their first 10 registered semesters, but have not held a five-year GCF or ECF, retain eligibility for NYSHIP health insurance.

Selection: is based on a combination of expertise/skill and financial need.
