Shannon Vittoria Organizes “Thomas Cole’s Journey: Atlantic Crossings” at The Met

Shannon Vittoria, a research associate at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and GC Art History alumna, has helped curate Thomas Cole’s Journey: Atlantic Crossings, on view through May 13! At the Graduate Center, Shannon specialized in American Art, 1750-1945, with a focus on American Victorianism, landscape painting and printmaking, and issues of gender and sexuality. In 2015, she defended dissertation “Nature and Nostalgia in the Art of Mary Nimmo Moran (1842-1899).”

Born in Northern England, Thomas Cole is celebrated as  one of America’s preeminent landscape painters. The current exhibition at the Met is the first examination of Cole’s career in relation to his European roots and travels, establishing him as a major figure in 19th-century landscape art within a global context.
